Composer Juan Sánchez

"My name is Juan Sánchez, and I am a composer – but I was not always this way. This journey of mine began when I started taking piano lessons at the conservatoire at only 14 years old, which is when a deep passion for music and creation of art was born. During the end of the 80’s until the end of the 90’s, I was playing the keyboard with different bands, which helped me to feed this passion. In 1995, I travelled to London to study music and technology, and this is where I lived for five years. In 1999, I started to make instrumental ambient electronic music, and since then I have been creating music for multimedia and sound libraries for music producers."

What inspires you on your way to become a composer?

For me, music is the best way to express emotions and feelings, these cannot be expressed with words and I think that the job of a composer of converting these emotions into music is fascinating.

Which musician or composer is your influencer?

There are so many composers that inspire me, some of them are Ludovico Einaudi, Max Richter, Philip Glass and Joep Beving. I have learned different things from each one of these composers and they all have influenced me in the way I create music.

Did something happened in your life when you first encounter music? What changed?

Music always played an important part of my like since I was a child, I was listening to music all the time, to me, music was something magical and the musicians that were creating it were like magicians to me. Everything changed the day I decided that I also wanted to create music and be like these artists I always admired.

What kind of music do you personally enjoy other than ambient music? What is so challenging in creating ambient music?

I enjoy different types of music such as Pop, Modern Classical, Solo Piano, etc… Nowadays I do not create solely ambient music, I create a mixture of modern classical and ambient music. For me, the challenge is that I do not want each piece to sound similar so for each composition I always try to use different pianos, different studios, producers and musicians so each piece has their unique sound.

Since COVID19 hits, do you think it has generated a change in the preferences of people in ambient or soothing music than before? What has change (/what has remain the same)?

I know that during the COVID-19 more people were listening to calming music as we are now experiencing a very stressful period and soothing music helps to relax your mind. The most popular playlists on Spotify are the ones that include relaxing music. Some people prefer to listen to calming piano music, while others prefer classical music or more downtempo and chill out, there are so many different types of calming music.

Which are 3 of your favorite musical instruments for creating ambient music?

I think that any instrument can be used to create ambient music as for this type of music the instruments are processed with effects such as reverbs, delays, etc… Once you add a good amount of these effects to any instrument, it starts sounding ambient, my favorite instruments for doing this are the piano and synthesizer.
