Fiona Ross: Red Flags and High

Named among the 100 Alternative Power Music List for 2020, multi-award winning jazz artist, editor-in-chief, journalist and founder of the award winning Women in Jazz Media organisation Fiona Ross never stops.

As vocalist, pianist, composer and producer, Fiona has become known for creating her own contemporary jazz sound incorporating fast paced Latin Jazz, vintage Jazz club, a little neo soul along with heart wrenching ballads that demonstrate that ‘Her style is poetic and the messages ooze with Millennial angst’ Jazz weekly. She came to the worlds attention as ‘the artist that gave Ed Sheeran his ‘first push’ Daily Express, but very quickly established herself as an artist in her own right and has received incredible reviews and awards across the globe for all of her albums.

"Red Flags and High Heels reflects on the emotional highs and emotional lows of this thing called life. The ‘Red Flags’ represent those things that just don’t sit right with you and although you are not always sure why and you don't’ always know what to do about it. The constant analysis. People’s ignorance. Those things you know you shouldn’t do, but you do anyway and you have no idea why you did them until after it has all gone wrong. But also the good things but with the inevitable highs it brings the lows. The ‘High Heels’ represent fun, sex and strength. For many, high heels bring to mind something sexy and playful, while for others they represent power, strength and freedom.

I went to town with brass for this album and fell in love with Dave Boa’s muted trumpet. I had also been spending a lot of time researching the history of jazz for my journalism work, and found myself writing a couple of tracks that are inspired by the legacy of jazz, such as ‘More Time’ which is Be Bop inspired.

My last album feature sleeve notes with the legend that is Maxine Gordon – she is a role model and a mentor to me. When I was thinking about this album, I thought it would be really incredible to have strong, fierce and inspirational women, who have inspired me, write the sleeve notes for each of my albums from now onwards, with Maxine leading the way. Celine Peterson instantly came to mind and I am absolutely thrilled that she agreed."

Fiona is very passionate about raising awareness and supporting Mental Health and Equality issues around the world.
